Scientific Field Trips & Post Conference Tour
The Rhizosphere 3 International Conference Committee has devised a wide range of field trips and tours to showcase our State during your stay. We encourage you to register for one of these tours and see what WA has to offer.
The Scientific Field Trips are hosted on the afternoon of Wednesday 28 September following the Conference lunch.
The Post Conference Tour will depart on the morning of Saturday 1 October.
Note: Each Trip and Tour indicates minimum and maximum numbers for viability. All Trips and Tours depart from and return to our Conference Venue, Burswood Exhibition Centre.
Spring in the Swan Valley
Time: Depart 1:00 pm - Return 9:30 pm
Location of Trip: Caversham Wildlife Park, Swan Valley, Guildford tourist regions.
Description: During this field trip we will take a break from the rigors and stress of an international conference to visit the Swan Valley region and spend time with Australian wildlife, as well as enjoy some of the local produce and cuisine. We will visit Caversham Wildlife Park where there will be plenty of time available for a leisurely wander to get up close and personal with some of Australia’s cute and furry inhabitants. Subsequently, we will stop for afternoon tea at the Margaret River Chocolate Company, and then pay a visit to one of the many wineries in the region. We will finish the trip by enjoying a relaxing meal at the Rose & Crown, a historic hotel in Guildford.

CSIRO & UWA Experiments
Time: Depart 1:30 pm - Return 5.00 pm
Location of Trip: CSIRO laboratories and adjacent University of Western Australia Shenton Park field station.
Description: The tour will (i) examine techniques being used to map root growth (root-growth boxes, minirhizotrons and electrical resistivity tomography) as part of studies that aim to identify crop traits needed to get cereals ready for climate change, (ii) approaches that are being used to improve nitrogen uptake in cereals and (iii) methods in use to elucidate the response of plants to root diseases such as Rhizoctonia and Fusarium. Activities on display will include plant transformation, gene expression and micro-fluorescent microscopy.

Kings Park Facilities

Description: Tour of research facilities, nursery and restoration seed-bank followed by a tour of Mt. Eliza Escarpment Restoration Programme.

UWA Stable Isotope & Microanalysis Facilities
Time: Depart 1:30 pm - Return 5.00 pm
Location of Trip: University of WA Laboratories
Description: The tour will highlight the state of the art-facilities and research being undertaken at the West Australian Biogeochemistry Centre (Stable Isotope Facility) and using the CAMECA Ion probe and NanoSIMS at the Centre for Microscopy and Microanalysis.

Post Conference Tour - Wildflower Tour
Time: Depart 8.30 am Saturday 1 October. Return 5.00 pm Sunday 2 October.
Location of Trip: Mt Lesueur National Park, Western Australia
Description: The tour will explore novel root systems used by native species to obtain nutrients.
Itinerary: Saturday will see us visiting the Pinnacles, Cervantes, Lesueur National Park overnight in Jurien Bay. Day 2 of the Tour explores Hi Vallee Farm, Jylland Vineyard for a lunch and wine tasting followed by a visit to Lullfitz Nursery to end the tour.
Included in registration: Coach travel. Saturday: morning and afternoon tea and overnight accommodation. Sunday: breakfast, morning tea, lunch and afternoon tea.
Not included in registration: Saturday: Lunch, Sunday: wine with lunch together with coffee and cake
Accommodation: Guests will stay overnight at the APEX Camp, Jurien in camp style accommodation. The price of this accommodation is included in your registration price.
